Joint Institute
for a Sustainable Energy Future (JISEEF)
This Institute, launched in 1998, is the result of collaboration
between CEEP and three partners from South Korea: the Research
Institute of Energy, Environment, and Economy of the Kyungbuk
National University, the Citizens’ Institute for Environmental
Studies of the Korean Federation of Environmental Movements,
and the Environment Planning Institute of Seoul National
University,. Prior to JISEEF’s formation, there was
no independent institute in East Asia addressing the issues
of sustainable energy and environmental policy. A major
multi-year research project is underway at JISEEF on a sustainable
energy future for South Korea (see our ‘Energy Projects’
page). The first phase of this research is reported in the
volume Energy Revolution: 21st Century Energy and Environmental
Strategy (published in English and Korean by Maeil Kyung
Jae Publishers). Through an examination of over 3,000 technologies
in use throughout the South Korean economy and society,
the 37-member research team of JISEEF identifies sufficient
cost-effective energy conservation and efficiency alternatives
to cancel the government’s plan to build 17 new nuclear
power plants by 2020.
