Renewable Energy
Policy Analysis
With
multi-year support from NREL, the Center has participated
in a wide range of policy analyses addressing national and
international development of solar, wind and other renewable
energy sources. These activities have included economic
evaluations of renewable energy technology choices and policy
options, comparative policy analyses (for example, on the
effectiveness of production and investment tax credits,
feed-in tariffs and renewable energy portfolio standards),
and assessments of the effects of climate and other global
policy strategies on renewable energy program development
and implementation. An example is CEEP’s innovative
approach to the economics of building integrated photovoltaic
(BIPV) applications in which PV panels are conceived as
energy services systems rather than simply energy supply
devices. In this mode, PV-generated electricity is used
to manage building peak loads, provide back-up energy support
during grid or building electricity system failures, and
offer architectural support for roof or façade shading.
Taken together, these services can yield benefits to building
users and owners that more than cover current costs.
