Sustainable Energy Strategies for Rural Development

Through support from the Blue Moon Fund and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL - the premier research institution on renewable energy technologies in the U.S.), CEEP students and faculty have had the special opportunity to work for 10 years on the challenges and possibilities of sustainable energy strategies for rural communities (who represent the majority of the human population). Economic, environmental and social analyses of off-grid solar and small-wind systems have been conducted and married with GIS software to represent the potential of a renewables-based approach to sustaining rural livelihoods. Focused on the provinces of Inner Mongolia, Qinghai and Xinjiang in Western China, this work has revealed the synergistic relationships between livelihoods-focused economic development and renewable energy.
