Renewable Energy Strategy for Western China

Biomass has long been recognized by rural society as a key energy source for agriculture, household services and local economic development. China’s Dalian County in Liaoning province has pioneered a “4-in-1” strategy for sustainable use of biomass serving all three needs in a balanced manner. As depicted in the graph below, this approach links biomass as soil nutrient with its utilization as a source of gas for cooking and lighting and as a heat source for small greenhouses. CEEP is now characterizing the energy, economic, environmental and health benefits of the “4-in-1” strategy (supported by the Blue Moon Fund).
