CEEP Sustainable Development Activities

Participation in WSSD and UNFCCC Deliberations

CEEP is an accredited observer organization for the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and was an accredited participating organization to the 2002 UN World Summit on Sustainable Development (held in Johannesburg, South Africa). In this capacity, CEEP contributes to the debate on sustainable development through its advocacy of an equity- and sustainability-based climate change response strategy and the Center’s championing of an ecological justice approach to questions of nature-society relations. Members participate annually in UN meetings, prepare position publications on policy concerns of interest to our community, research and publish publications, and join with movements and organizations to seek political action on behalf of a sustainable future.

Environmental Testimony in Taiwan to Challenge Projects

Threatening the Habitat of the Endangered Black-faced Spoonbill
In a key policy debate for Taiwan, CEEP joined with SAVE (Spoonbill Action Voluntary Echo) to speak against Taiwan’s largest ever proposed development project, the Binnan Industrial Complex. CEEP testified before the Legislative Yuan in Taiwan that the proposed refinery and steel production facilities planned for Binnan would add nearly 28 million tons of carbon to the island’s annual releases (measured at 1990 levels, this is equal to a stunning increase of 25%). In addition, Professor Byrne was invited to make a special presentation to the Taiwan Sustainable Energy and Industrial Policy Conference sponsored by the Legislative Yuan. Through its intervention in the Binnan case, CEEP contributed to Taiwan’s decision to adopt a GHG action target of stabilized emissions at year 2000 levels by the year 2020, a step which precludes construction of the Project.
